Author Charlie Leduff, writes about the struggling police department in Flint, Michigan and how citizen and police tension and governmental financial cuts have put a stain on it and has deteriorated how well the police department runs. The author maintains a casual tone throughout the article, using monosyllabic words and hooking the readers in by describing a normal night in Flint. The author main point of the article was to let people outside of Flint know that Flint is still struggling. Now not only because of their water but their own police department. The author is sure to add in how late response times are common in Flint and even a included direct quote from a citizen trying to report a shooting where the 911 operator responds by saying there has already been 3 other shootings before that citizen's call and that the police will be awhile away. The author appeals to pathos by including photos of the tragic landscape of Flint. One of the photos showed a police officer holding a baby while other police officers put that baby's father in handcuffs. This appeals to pathos because audiences will start to feel bad for the baby because now they wonder what happens to her after her father goes to jail. Another appeal to pathos from the pictures shown was a picture of the ground in an abandoned house; and on the ground was a black man holding a diploma in his cap and gown. This appeals to audience's pathos because then one may start to wonder what happened to that high school boy in the picture. Not only does the author including pictures appeal to pathos but it also appeals to ethos by giving an inside look of Flint in present day. This adds on to the author's credibility and makes all the things he is saying about Flint more reliable.
All in all, the author obviously has some sort of emotional attachment to the story and shows it by being mostly bias in his article and only speaking on the perspective of the citizens but never once talking about how hard it might be living in Flint for the officers that are given the job to protect it.

After Trump's first State of the Union Address author, Troy Patterson wrote about the discrepancies in Trump's speech. The author starts off by stating how different the hora around Trump's State of the Union Address was compared to Presidents. Author appeals to ethos by including video clips from the speech in his post, and summarizing each statement made by Trump after. There isn't much of an emotional attachment shown within the article. The tone throughout is very scholarly and straight to the point. The author uses monosyllabic words and includes phrases that would attract an older audience. The author's point of the article was to shine light on the underlined intentions of the President and to inform readers everywhere of the truth behind the statements said in the live address. The author also appeals to ethos in the article by name dropping a couple of anchors of big time News Studios that reported on Trump's big night and specifically included details that pertained to his stance.
The overall goal of this article was to report back on Trump's first State of the Union Address and to highlights some of its flaws. The author successfully accomplished his goal by packing in quotes and fact checking all of Trump's statements. In this article, the author does an excellent job of depicting the life of R&B and Hip Hop singer Miguel. The author starts off by stating why Miguel became Miguel and why we attracts so many different listeners. Specifically saying Miguel "made a career out of finding creative ways to render small pleasures in sound." The author also goes on to write about how Miguel is different from many of his other successors and his other competitors in the music business. Insinuating that while others write songs about sex and drugs as if the two are a conquest to life, Miguel writes about sex and drugs with a calm and self controlled demeanor. The purpose of this article was to highlight Miguel's come up and what he went through trying to succeed in this music business. Miguel knew he didn't want to be like everyone else, he just didn't know how to make that happen. The author mentions a low point in Miguel's career when talking about the law dispute between his record label and his production company in 2010 that kept his R&B album "All I Want Is You", on the shelf for 2 years. The author appeals to logos in this instance stating a fact that many were not aware of in Miguel's career. The author later in the article appeals to ethos when stating the revival of Miguel's career and name dropping famous rapper and singer Travis Scott that was featured in one of Miguel's songs. By the author doing this, he appeals to the readers’ ethos by making Miguel more credible to someone who might not have heard about Miguel but know about Travis Scott, which then makes the article more credible. The author uses informal diction and monosyllabic words. Using this diction, the author creates a calm and laid back atmosphere reflecting the calm and laid back music Miguel produces. The author's tone is earnest and exuberant throughout the article as the author praises the come up of Miguel. The author's goal of writing about the story of Miguel and his downfalls and upbringings in the music business. The author Hua Hsu successfully does this with his clear emotional attachment to the story of Miguel and his informal and earnest tone.
