In this article, the author takes a skeptical and critical view of our president, Donald Trump. The author begins his article by refreshing the reader of past remarks the president has made toward former President Barak Obama. He specifically mentions how Trump once insinuated that Obama was accepted into both Ivy League colleges, Columbia and Harvard for reasons other than Obama's intelligence. The author here creates a tense and judgemental tone towards the president by bringing back this extremely disrespectful quote. This was only to kick off the rest of the article where the author will continue to ridicule and poke at Trump's faults. The author shows his strong emotional attachment to the issue that is Donald Trump in the beginning of his article, calling Trump's 2011 rampage of trying to debunk Obama's citizenship "racist", right off the bat. It is obvious that the author has a strong disliking of Trump and he makes sure that is clear, with his use of ethos. He makes his article more credible by stating direct quotes from Trump himself, making his aim to paint Trump in a negative manner, successful. He doesn't have to do much convincing the reader to come to the conclusion that Trump isn't the most respectful person in the world, when the harsh things being written came straight from his mouth. The author's point of the article however, has not much to do with Trump himself but how African Americans are treated now and seen through the eyes of Trump after his induction into office. The author chooses to appeal to logos in one instance saying “Last year, African-Americans constituted just five per cent of the students at élite universities, with a large portion of that minority coming from abroad. In the hands of the Trump Administration, that number could, conceivably, grow smaller, not just at élite universities but across higher education.”. His prediction that the population that is African American in colleges can decrease after Trump is in office further emphasizes his attitude towards Trump, which isn’t a good one. His overall point being that African Americans have lost their place on the list of important issues in America and have lost their voice once President Trump came to be. This is a valuable and worth talking about opinion, because from the looks of it it, through the media and the words of Trump itself, his opinion can be deemed true. The author uses informal diction and monosyllabic words. Using this diction, the author creates a platform for him to express this opinion along with his facts to successfully make clear his position.
