Author Charlie Leduff, writes about the struggling police department in Flint, Michigan and how citizen and police tension and governmental financial cuts have put a stain on it and has deteriorated how well the police department runs. The author maintains a casual tone throughout the article, using monosyllabic words and hooking the readers in by describing a normal night in Flint. The author main point of the article was to let people outside of Flint know that Flint is still struggling. Now not only because of their water but their own police department. The author is sure to add in how late response times are common in Flint and even a included direct quote from a citizen trying to report a shooting where the 911 operator responds by saying there has already been 3 other shootings before that citizen's call and that the police will be awhile away. The author appeals to pathos by including photos of the tragic landscape of Flint. One of the photos showed a police officer holding a baby while other police officers put that baby's father in handcuffs. This appeals to pathos because audiences will start to feel bad for the baby because now they wonder what happens to her after her father goes to jail. Another appeal to pathos from the pictures shown was a picture of the ground in an abandoned house; and on the ground was a black man holding a diploma in his cap and gown. This appeals to audience's pathos because then one may start to wonder what happened to that high school boy in the picture. Not only does the author including pictures appeal to pathos but it also appeals to ethos by giving an inside look of Flint in present day. This adds on to the author's credibility and makes all the things he is saying about Flint more reliable.
All in all, the author obviously has some sort of emotional attachment to the story and shows it by being mostly bias in his article and only speaking on the perspective of the citizens but never once talking about how hard it might be living in Flint for the officers that are given the job to protect it.
